Before You Start
You will need to have a permanent address in England, Scotland or Wales in order to apply for a provisional driving licence. Click here to find out more.
Provisional Licence
Before you can learn to drive you must have applied for and be in receipt of a Provisional Driving Licence. You can apply for the licence either by post (application form D1 available from Post Offices), or on-line You will need a passport style photo and the fee is £50.00. Click here for more details.
Age requirement
You must be aged 17 or over in order to drive a car or begin to learn to drive and you must hold a valid, current provisional driving licence. You can apply for a provisional licence up to 3 months before your 17th birthday. Click here for more details.
Eyesight Requirement
As part of the practical driving test, you must be able to read a car number plate from a distance of 20.5metres. If you need to wear glasses to read the numberplate you will be expected to wear glasses for your driving test. Click here for more details.
